SHOWREPORT:

Thank you all for inviting me to judge again. It was a great honour to officiate at your 10 th . Anniversary show.It was also very nice to come back to Portugal so soon, as it gave me an opportunity to monitor the progress of the breeds that are kept and shown and the quality of them. For me, it was particularly nice to see a greater variety of Self breeds appearing at the show. The more breeds and colours, the better –as it makes your shows more interesting and perhaps eventually draws new members into the club.

As I said at the show, it is a pity that you do not have 5/8 months classes at your shows, particularly for the longhaired breeds. I can fully appreciate that the numbers at CAPI's shows don't warrant these age classes, but I still feel that the longhairs are at a disadvantage. A 5½ months old Sheltie is never going to beat one that is 9 or 10 months old. You do not have many shows per calendar year and by the time this (by now perhaps 9 months old) cavy can be shown again at the next show, it will probably have landed up in the breeding pen.

This brings me onto my next topic: I hope by the time CAPI's membership has grown a bit more, that it will be possible to separate out clipped longhairs into their own classes.

To put clipped and non-clipped longhairs in the same class is totally unfair to those members, who try their best to keep their exhibits in coat. A classic example at the show was the competition between “Ringing Bells” and “Betty Boop”. The evenness and density of Betty Boop's coat is phenomenal, but the texture is coarse and ruined.

Ringing Bells therefore had to be the winner, as the density and evenness of coat was natural and non-cosmetic, whilst its texture was fantastic. The class that probably was closest was the Adult Coronet class, from where I found my eventual BIS: “Shuh-Tzi Ermelinda”, shown by Rui & Susana Abreu. “Ermelinda” won on shape, placement and size of coronet and it also had a slightly better density. “ Calista”, shown by Carminda Santos ran the winner very close, though.

It was a pity in a way that “Calista” could not compete on the BIS table, as this pig was potentially of better quality that the second, third and fourth placed exhibits in the final.I was so pleased to have found “my old mate” ‘Regalia Tea Rose' again from a very strong field. This sow is such a special little star. Well done, Luis –your pigs have improved so much in the last 12 months!

In the Self section, there were a few exhibits that were neither one breed nor another, obviously created through cross breeding.

It will be my pleasure to make sure that we get some purebred, quality cavies to Portugal , so that these Self breeds can be further developed and raised to a higher standard.

Please do not forget; if you need advice or help in obtaining cavies from North, Middle or Western Europe for importation into Portugal , I will only be too pleased to assist you. Finally, all exhibits were very fit, clean and beautifully presented again, which is a credit to you all.

Congratulations to all winners -your stock is outstanding and a pleasure to handle. Commiserations to those members, that just missed out on the top spots, but I am sure your time will come soon. I wish you all much success at your next show in Batalha in December. Enjoy the company of your cavies and that of your fellow members! You have a grand club going with a great atmosphere and true friendship.

I feel proud to be part of CAPI.

Evelyne van Vliet
